Tillery Park
Location: Austin, TX
Year: 2021
Collaborator: Danielle Lake
First Place winner, 2021 AIA Austin Force Majeure Design Competition
Tillery Park will be a community anchor during times of normalcy, and a source of stability during periods of uncertainty. The open space at the primary vehicular entry to the park will be a flexible space to be used by farmers market vendors, a plaza for community events, or a single-file pick-up and drop-off area for drivers leaving donations, picking up a produce box, or filing through a pop-up vaccination clinic or testing location. Two portions of the site house community gardens, which will be an asset during normal times, and an invaluable resource when the next disaster or pandemic impacts supply chains. The agricultural projects will also provide sources of income for people who need work or who come to Tillery Park for other community services. Socially distant and separated bathroom and shower facilities will offer paired sinks that allow families to wash up together, while maintaining social distance from other users. There will be a clear path for visitors to circulate the interior facility space, and the hallways will be wide enough to accommodate groups of people without fear of overcrowding. The site includes walking trails that lead to a variety of nature-based and recreational experiences. Though it is located among several transit corridors that have the history and potential to separate neighborhoods, Tillery Park will be an accessible hub that links to a larger existing trail system within East Austin. The Boggy Creek Greenbelt and other green spaces along the Colorado River will be connected via trail network, and punctuated by sites such as Tillery Park, which provides services and amenities for the residents of East Austin.
